Ok, let’s test how much of a true Orlando Bloom fan you are! If you already know these extremely interesting but less well-known facts about Bloom then well done! Many fans won’t. I’ve had a hard think about all of the things I know about Bloom (it’s a lot) and put together the top 10 random and interesting facts that you might not know. Check them out…

1. Bloom is diagonised with dyslexia

At 11 years old Bloom was diagnosed with dyslexia. There are great misunderstandings about dyslexia, many assume people that have it will be low achievers and not do well academically. When in fact, people with dyslexia usually have very high IQs (as Bloom did) but have problems with reading and spelling. So they have to work a little bit harder than others! Bloom didn’t let this stop him and claims Drama school helped him with reading out loud until he perfected it. A great example is that you should never let any labels hold you back. Anything is possible!

2. Blooms management wasn’t happy with his role in ‘Troy (2004)’

Bloom’s management clashed over whether he should play the character of Paris in ‘Troy’. Bloom’s manager, Aleen Keshishian, was very against the idea. He felt that Bloom deserved a better role and Paris was the weak, feeble one who could barely fight. He wanted a role with much more power for Bloom. However, the chairman of Blooms management, Jeff Kwatinetz, thought the role of Paris was perfect for him. He viewed the character as an extremely important supporting character with magnificent traits.

3. Bloom wasn’t initally selected for the male lead in ‘Elizabethtown’ (2005)

It was in fact Ashton Kutcher who was first selected for the male lead in the movie. They filmed for a whole two months before the director Cameron Crowe decided something wasn’t working and fired Kutcher. He decided to ask Bloom to fill the role and Bloom accepted. And the film was a huge success. Better late than never ey! Oh and if you haven’t already our Orlandos Love Life History page then this is where he met Kirsten Dunst who he dated for a while.

4. Bloom also wasn’t the first male lead selected for ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ (2005)

Russel Crowe was originally selected to play the lead role of Balian de Ibelin for $20 million. However, he backed out of the film and Bloom was the next to be selected. Bloom only took 1/10 of what Crowes was offered and played for $2 million. Unfortunately, the film was not as much success as the producers hoped. In fact, it was a financial disappointment.

5. Orlando didn’t know one Katy Perry song before meeting her

You’re probably thinking, how?! Orlando claims he wasn’t familiar with her music and couldn’t name any of her songs prior to meeting her. And it was her charming and bubbly personality that won him over when they met at the 2016 Golden Globes. Now they are happily engaged, let’s hope he could name a few songs now.

6. Bloom didn’t tell his son Flynn about his role in Pirates of the Caribbean for a while

Why wouldn’t you want to let your son know that you played a leading role in one of the most famous films in the world? a super badass pirate? Bloom claims he wanted to keep as much regularity as he could between the two for as long as possible. To focus solely on their father-son bond. However, when Flynn began school, Bloom knew this was the right time to introduce him to Pirates of the Caribbean. The likelihood of the kids’ findings out from parents that he played Will Turner was very high. I mean, who hasn’t watched Pirates of the Caribbean? And who wouldn’t recognise Orlando Bloom was if he turned up at the end of the school day?

7. Blooms favourite hobby is moutain biking

Yep, he isn’t just a talented actor. In fact, he’s also a very good mountain biker and likes to do it as much as possible in his spare time. It gives him the feeling of being connected to nature and disconnecting from everything for a while. This is why his star role as Andy Samberg in Tour de Pharmacy was so brilliantly suited!

8. Blooms’ been in the wars a fair few times

Bloom is very active and the typical daredevil who loves to try new things. He claims that he’s basically broken every bone in his body, a slight exaggeration but after researching all of his breakages, he definitely comes close. Some of his injuries have occurred whilst filming. In Lord of the Rings, he broke his ribs by falling off a horse and was crushed by another actor. It took him a while to recover and he was ordered to take a short break from filming. He has also broken many bones snowboarding such as his nose, wrist and arm.

9. Bloom stayed lowkey on Instagram up until 2016

Bloom had a private Instagram account up until 2016 when he decided to make it public. His first uploaded picture was a handwritten note saying ‘I caved’. This Instagram account was a complete secret and the only people following were close friends and family. The public had no idea that he was even active on Instagram. We assume he wanted to keep his privacy for as long as possible and there is no clear indication as to why he changed it to the public, perhaps pressure from the public?

10. Bloom priortised raising his son and put his acting career on hault

For a short while after his divorce from Miranda Kerr, Bloom decided to prioritize raising his son over his career. They started to co-parent and Bloom wanted to ensure he was being the best father he could be. Therefore, he didn’t actively pursue any roles for a while. It wasn’t until Kerr found a new partner that Bloom felt more at ease and started to put more focus into his career again. He claims he missed out on a few roles but it was worth the time he spend purely focusing on raising Flynn.

Naturally, if you’re an Orlando fan, you’d want to know who he’s dated in the past and who he’s currently dating. We need to know who to be jealous of right? Let’s take a look…

1. Kirsten Dunst

Orlando dated Kirsten briefly in 2005 whilst he and Kate Bosworth were on a break. They met each other whilst working on the romance/ drama movie Elizabethtown which was released in 2005. The costars naturally got close after playing the roles of women and men that fall deeply in love.

Kirsten Dunst is an American actress that grew up in Point Pleasant. New Jersey, United States. Her career actually began as early as 3 years old, but not as an actor, she was modelling and appearing in many different commercials. She first featured in a film a 6 years old ‘Oedipus Wrecks’ (1989) and the rest is history! It’s fair to say she was a born actress with a natural talent to entertain. You’ll recognise her face in many famous movies! Such as ‘Jumanji’ (1995), ‘Bring it On’ (2000) ‘Spider-Man’ (2002), ‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004), ‘Spider-Man 3’ (2007) and ‘Marie Antoinette’ (2006). And so many less famous but equally incredible films-

2. Kate Bosworth

Orlando dated Kate from 2003 to 2006. However, as previously mentioned, they had a break during 2005 and he dated Kirsten Dunst for a while. Nonetheless, they sorted their problems out and got back together before finally splitting in 2006. They have both reported that they remain ”really really good friends” and there is no bad blood between them.

Catherine (Kate) Bosworth is an American actress and model that grew up in Los Angeles, California. Growing up Kate was obsessed with horses and became a very talented equestrian. When she was just 14 years old when she decided she wanted to audition to become part of the cast for a movie about horses. She got the part and this is how her career began! She was a natural in front of the camera. She has now featured in at least 35 movies over her career. Such as ‘Blue Crush’ (2002), ‘Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!’ (2004), ‘Superman Returns’ (2006), ’21’ (2008), ‘Straw Dogs’ (2011) and many more!

3. Miranda Kerr

Orlando dated Miranda from 2009 – 2010 before proposing to her. They were married for three years from 2010 to 2013 and had their first child Flynn together. It’s rumoured that the two split because of Bloom’s party habits which started the breakdown of their marriage. However, the two still remain friends and co-parent for their son.
Miranda Kerr is an Australian model that grew up in Sydney. Growing up she always had dreams to become a model so when she was just 13 years old she applied to the 1997 Dolly magazine model search competition – and won! This is where her modelling career kickstarted. She rose to fame in 2006 when she was scouted to become a Victoria Secret Angel – every models dream!

4. Katy Perry

Katy and Orlando met in 2016 and got engaged in 2019 on Valentines Day! Unfortunately, the wedding has been put on hold for a while due to the COVID19 pandemic. However, we’re very excited and expect big things for the wedding day! These two truly make a magnificent couple and seem very happy together.

Katy Perry is an American singer-songwriter that grew up in Santa Barba, California. She always had a passion for singing from a young age and at nine years old she joined a gospel choir in a church in which she stayed from nine to thirteen. She’s now released 6 studio albums which have all been a great success. These include ‘Katy Hudson’ (2001), ‘One of the Boys’ (2008), ‘Teenage Dreams’ (2010), ‘Prism’ (2013), ‘Witness’ (2017) and ‘Smile’ (2020). She earned her first Grammy nomination for the incredible song release ”I Kissed A Girl”. And we expect more big things from this incredibly talented singer!

Orlando Bloom has featured in an incredible 38 films throughout his career – yep, he’s been busy! As a true Orlando fan, I can say we’ve watched them ALL back to front. Therefore, I have chosen the top 10 (in my personal opinion) check them out…

BEWARE there might be a few spoilers in here, so skim past the descriptions of the ones you haven’t already watched!

1. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ (2002)

Like all of the Lord of the Rings, this film is based on the second volume of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. This is the second film in the trilogy and in my opinion hands down the best one. It features an action-packed plot with great character development. The plot centres around Frodo and Sams adventure to Mordor (base of the evil Sauron). En route, they encounter the incredible character of Gollum, who is dominated by the Rings power. Together they are on a mission to save the people of Rohan against Saurons evil powers. Alongside the other main characters – Gandalf, Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas who have the same goal and stay on Rohan grounds to protect. Orlando plays the character of Legolas.

2. ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ (2003)

This is the final movie of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. So yep you guessed it, the directors have gone all out to make sure it goes out with a bang (literally). The nightmare comes to an end as the Evil Eye of Sauron explodes and Frodo and Sam manage to escape. At least that’s what they think… the explosion causes Mount Doom to erupt so Mordor crumbles with the hobits still there. It’s safe to say this part of the movie is absolute chaos as everything crumbles before their eyes. But fear not! Gandalf flies in with the eagles to rescue the hobbits. Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor and takes Arwen as his queen! A very happy ending indeed.

3. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ (2001)

This was the very first instalment in the Lord of the Rings series – little did we all know how much of a success it would be. It all begins with the main character Frodo who inherits the One Ring. He’s unsure of its powers and goes to Gandalf to enquire. Gandalf warns is also unsure but warns him to keep it secret and unused until he finds out. And he does just that for the next 17 years! He needs to destroy Mount Doom and along his quest, he realises that the ring is protecting him from evil.

4. Tour de Pharmacy (2017)

You’re probably not expecting to see this film on the list, but I absolutely love it! It’s very different from the usual blockbuster movies that Orlando stars in but it’s incredible all the same. Tour de Pharmacy is a mockumentary/comedy with some fantastic actors. The main characters are Marty Hass (Andy Samberg), Slim Robinson (Daveed Diggs), Gustav Ditters (John Gena) and Adrian Baton ( Freddie Highmore) and Juji Pepe (Orlando Bloom). A team of (drugged up) bikers are determined to complete the 1982 Tour de France. Will they complete it?

5. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ (2003)

This was the first-ever Pirates of the Caribbean movie and it’s safe to say it gained its fan base very rapidly after release. So we knew a second one was guaranteed. But little did we know that we’d be blessed with a total of 6! The plot starts off with a bunch of evil pirates who destroy a seaside town and kidnap the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann. In desperation to save her, the governor calls in Captain Jack Sparrow, known for his heroicness and pure heart. They both team up and hunt down the nasty pirates, rescue Elizabeth and get revenge.

6. ‘Black Hawk Down’ (2001)

Orlando Bloom plays PFC Todd Blackburn in this war/action movie. The film is set in 1993 and is based on a real-life event in Somali East Africa. In October 1993, the U.S sent the special forces into Somalia to help save the people from the destructive government. The people of Somalia were in great danger with no water, food or aid and were struggling to survive. However, the Somalian forces are fighting back and the U.S forces are in great danger.

7. ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ (2013)

Although this film was released after the Lord of the Rings, it was actually written before and is a prequel. It takes place in the same universe but 60 years before the Lord of the Rings! The film centres around the adventure/quest of thirteen dwarves, Thorin, Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf to the Lonely Moutain in search to steal the Arkenstone from the dragon. The journey is filled with lots of obstacles and all of their lives are in great danger.

8. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (2014)

Needless to say, there have been many adaptations of the story of Romeo and Juliet. But this film is by far one of the best! Orlando Bloom takes the leading role as Romeo. I don’t think it’s necessary to explain the plot… everyone has either watched the original or a modern adaption at some point. But this version is phenomenal (perhaps I’m biased because Bloom is featured in it though).

9. ‘The Good Doctor’ (2011)

The Good Doctor is a thriller/drama where Orlando Bloom plays the starring role as Dr Martin Blake. A talented doctor whose powerful and demanding personality alienates him from the other doctors and nurses. At face value, he presents himself as a caring doctor with all the patients best interests at heart, but there is a much darker side to him. His narcissistic traits mean he has a need to control everything and everyone. 18-year-old Diane Nixon is admitted into the hospital with a kidney infection and when he cures her, her family are extremely grateful. Referring to him as ‘their hero’ boosts his ego massively. He tampers with her medications so she stays ill and gives everyone the illusion that he is helping to continue to fuel his ego. But he goes too far.

10. ‘Digging for Fire’ (2015)

Orlando Bloom plays the character of Ben in this drama/comedy movie. The plot centres around a happily married couple, Tim and Lee, that are raising their young boy together. However, they are both clearly at very different stages in life. Both take a weekend break away from one another and the movie centres around this weekend. Whilst Lee is seeking answers on parenthood and marriage, Tim is digging the backyard with his friends. He’s searching for more after discovering a gun and bone in his backyard.

Let’s take a look at all of Orlando Blooms family members…

Parents

Mother

Orlandos’ mother was called Sonia Constance Josephine Copeland. She was born in Kolkata, India where she met Bloom’s father, Harry Bloom. They both decided to start life in Canterbury Kent, England to raise their children. Sonia ran a foreign language school in Canturbury whilst Orlando was growing up. She was a keen businesswoman whilst also maintained a strong passion for art. This is why she decided to name her son after her favourite English composer, Orlando Gibbons. His mother was the main reason he got into acting, she loved all creative subjects – music, drama and art. Therefore, she’d encourage all of her children to attend after school drama classes amongst others.

Father(s)

Orlando believes that Harry Bloom and Colin Stone were both his fathers. The reason for this is in Blooms earliest years, he believed that his biological father was his mother’s husband, Harry Bloom. Harry was an anti-apartheid novelist that was married to Orlandos mother for many years. Unfortunately, Harry passed away when Orlando was just four years old. After his death and when she felt Orlando was old enough (13 years old), she revealed to him that his biological dad was in fact Colin Stone. Stone was the principal of the Concorde International language school. The interesting thing is that he was always a close family friend and that’s all Orlando thought he was. The reasons for not being honest from birth are unknown.

Siblings

Sister

Samantha Bloom is Orlandos older sister and was born two years before him in 1975. Samantha also use to attend drama classes with Orlando that their mother would take them to after school. She also graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. So it’s no surprise that she followed in her brother’s footsteps and became an actress. She has now been in three incredible films – ‘Cashback’ (2006), ‘Pride & Prejudice’ (2005) and ‘Love and Other Disasters’ (2006).

Brother

Steve Bloom was Orlando’s older brother and was born in 1953 in South Africa. Growing up he took on his mothers love for art and attending many different creative classes growing up. Eventually, he decided to focus on photography because this is where his passion lied. He says he was initially inspired by the pictures in Life magazine. He later decided to travel to England where some of the pictures were published and exhibited internationally by The International Defence and Aid Fund. He’s now published many different hugely successful photography books. These include ‘Spirit of the Wild’ (2007), Elephants: A Book for Children (2008), ‘Big Cats: In Search of Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, and Tigers’ (2012) and ‘Polar Animals: In Search of Polar Bears, Penguins, Whales and Seals’ (2012). But many more too!

Brother

Peter Bloom was Orlando’s older brother and was born in 1944 in South Africa. Unfortunately, Orlando never got to meet his older brother because he passed away at just six weeks old leaving his parents devastated.
